The Sigma Zeta
Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was
chartered at Albion's campus on April 8, 2001. The
chapter was initially an Interest Group known as the
Precious Ebony pearls that was founded in 1999. Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first
historically black sorority. It was founded in 1908
at Howard University. Their colors are pink and green
and the motto is "service to all mankind." The "AKA"
symbol is the ivy and their flower is the tea
rose. Sigma Zeta Chapter on Albion's campus is small
in numbers but still manages to do a lot. They hold an
annual AKA Date, a date auction to raise money that is
donated to breast cancer research. They also have coat
drives, tutor and teach important information about college
preparation and various other subjects. The purpose
of the Sigma Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha is to
cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical
standards, to promote unity and friendship among college
women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning
girls and women in order to improve their social stature,
to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to
be of service to all mankind.
