Howard B. Allen
(1914)
Howard was born on November 19, 1892 and majored in
chemistry and physics while at Albion College and went on
to receive his MA from the University of Michigan. A member
of the Zetalethian Society at Albion, he was also captain
of the 1914 Albion College basketball team. Howard was a
high school teacher and principal for over 20 years and
owner of an insurance agency for over 40 years. His
grandson David Allen Althouse graduated from Albion in
1961.

George G. Bechtel (A.B.
1903, A.M. 1905)
George was born in
Potterville, Michigan on July 24, 1882 and entered Albion
College in September of 1898. George graduated with the
class of 1903 after having withdrawn during the 1900-01
school year so he could work in Bay City. A member of Delta
Tau Delta, he was also a member of football teams of '99,
'01, '02, and '03. George received his A.M. from Albion
1905 and his LLB from Detroit College in 1912. Mr. Bechtel
went on to teach and coach in the high schools of Albion,
Coldwater, and Detroit.
George was Chairman of the Commission on Missions for the
First Methodist Church, member of Conference Board of
Missions and Church Extension; President, Pan Pacific
Centers, Inc., an organization devoted to the orientation
and sponsorship of Asian students; National Chancellor of
Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity.
From April 7, 1910 issue of The
Pleiad, “Gerald G.
Bechtel, A.B. ’03 and A. M. ’05, who is in
charge of the history department of Detroit Central High
School, is writing a text book of American History for
Atchinson, Menzer & Grover Co., of New York and
Chicago.” His brother, Glen, and
granddaughter also attended Albion
College.

D. Hale Brake
(1916)
Hal was born in Caledonia, Michigan on March 5, 1891.
Member of Michigan state senate 25th District, 1935-42;
candidate in primary for Lieutenant Governor of Michigan,
1942; Michigan state treasurer, 1943-54; defeated, 1954;
delegate to Republican National Convention from Michigan,
1944; candidate in primary for Governor of Michigan, 1954;
candidate for justice of Michigan state supreme court,
1955; delegate to Michigan state constitutional convention
from 25th Senatorial District, 1961-62. Member,
Freemasons.

Edward was a member of the Homiletic Brotherhood while at
Albion.

Clem is shown in the second row, second from the

Clement Francis Crowley
(1907)
Clem was the Honorable
Clement Francis Crowley (d. 1962). Clem is only listed as
“Crowley” in the 1908 Albionian photograph of
the 1906 football team, and then no place else – not
in any yearbooks, not even in student directories.
The
Pleiad mentioned that
“Crowley” scored the winning touchdown in the
game against Adrian. (Editor's note- The postcard shown on
the Men's Football page was sent right after that game.)
Clement Crowley went on to become a Denver, Colorado
attorney and State Representative, serving nine terms in
the Colorado House of Representatives in the offices of
floor speaker, speaker pro tem, and chairman of the rules
committee. He resigned his House seat in 1951 to become
Assistant Regional Attorney for the Office of Price
Stabilization. Clem had two sons, one of which died in 1948
and was survived by the other, Churchill, and a grandson.

Horace F. Donigan
(1911)
Horace attended Albion from 1906-09 (d. 1936) and obtained
a business degree in 1911. He was originally from Flint,
Michigan.

Leora O. Hall
(1870)

Leora was born in 1848 and came to Albion College from
Niles, Michigan in September of 1866. After graduating with
the class of 1870 she became a teacher in her home town of
Niles. While on campus Leora’s studies included:

Pearl B. Keene (1911,
1912)
Ms. Keene received a music degree from Albion in 1911 and
then an art degree in 1912.

Elsie E. Munro
(1926)
Winner of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1973, Elsie was
an English Professor at Albion College for many years. She
is mentioned as one of two possible candidates for
which The Sweetheart of
Sigma Chi was written. A strong
supporter of Albion College, Elsie has a gallery named
after her in the Bobbitt Arts Center. She is lovingly
remembered by many of the brothers of Delta Tau Delta,
whose house stood next door to her home on Michigan Avenue.
Harold F. Wagner
(1918)
Harold attended Albion for four years, graduating in 1918
with a major in accounting or finances. Harold was killed
in WWI and is listed on the WWI Memorial Tablet which is
displayed in the library. All of the photos shown on the
Forum and Clionian Literary Society pages come from his
scrapbook.
